Studying in South Korea can be an incredible experience! Known for its world-class education system, cutting-edge technology, and rich cultural heritage, South Korea is becoming one of Asia’s top destinations for international students. Here’s what you should know if you’re planning to study there:
South Korea is home to many prestigious universities recognized globally for their academic excellence. Some top institutions include:
Seoul National University (SNU)
Korea University (KU)
Yonsei University (YU)
KAIST (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology)
POSTECH (Pohang University of Science and Technology)
Hanyang University
Seoul is the most popular choice, but cities like Busan, Daegu, and Daejeon also offer great universities with lower living costs.
Many universities offer programs in English, especially at the postgraduate level. However, knowing basic Korean (Hangul) can make daily life, communication, and part-time work much easier.
đź’ˇ Tip: You can take a Korean language course (TOPIK) before or during your studies to improve your experience.
Tuition costs vary by university and degree level:
Undergraduate programs: ₩4,000,000–₩8,000,000 per semester (~USD 3,000–6,000)
Postgraduate programs: ₩5,000,000–₩9,000,000 per semester (~USD 3,800–6,800)
The South Korean government, universities, and organizations offer many scholarships, such as:
Global Korea Scholarship (GKS)
University-specific scholarships (e.g., SNU, Yonsei, KAIST)
Industry or exchange-based programs
Living expenses depend on your location:
Seoul: ₩900,000–₩1,800,000 per month (USD 650–1,300)
Smaller cities: ₩600,000–₩1,000,000 per month (USD 450–750)
On-campus dormitories are the most affordable housing option for international students.
International students need a D-2 Student Visa. Requirements include:
Admission letter from a recognized university
Proof of financial ability
Valid passport
Medical checkup (if required)
Visa application fee
You must also register for an Alien Registration Card (ARC) within 90 days of arrival.
South Korea offers an amazing mix of modern innovation and ancient tradition. From K-pop and Korean dramas to palaces and street food, there’s always something to explore. The country’s efficient public transport makes travel easy, and nearby destinations like Japan and China are just short flights away.
Most universities accept online applications directly through their websites.
Key documents usually include:
Academic transcripts
Statement of purpose
Recommendation letters
Proof of language proficiency (English or Korean)
Passport copy
🕒 Application deadlines are typically March–April (for fall semester) and September–October (for spring semester).
All international students must enroll in National Health Insurance (NHI), which provides access to affordable medical care. You’ll need to apply for this after receiving your Alien Registration Card.
Students with a D-2 visa can work up to 20 hours per week during the semester and unlimited hours during vacations, with university permission. Basic Korean skills are often required for most part-time jobs.
